7th November 2018 Lakshmi Pujan / Ashwin Amavasya
November 6 @ 10:30 pm - November 7 @ 9:30 pm UTC+0
Lakshmi Puja, or the worship of the goddess of wealth, is the main event of Diwali in North and West India. It is popularly believed that Lakshmi likes cleanliness and will visit the cleanest house first. Hence, the broom is worshiped with offerings of haldi (turmeric) and sindoor (vermilion) on this day. Lamps are lit in the evening to welcome the goddess as they are believed to light up her path.
The Hindu calendar states that the first fortnight (15 days) of the month of Ashwin are considered very sacred for karmic cleansing and for performing rituals and prayers for the forefathers. Ashwin Amavasya is also known as Sarva Pitru Amavasya or MahalayaAmavasya.
